Revival – Week 1 | When Revival Started
When Revival Started – Week 1 | When Revival Started
Communicator: Ryan Smart
Main Text: John 19, Genesis 3, Isaiah 53
Theme: Revival doesn't matter if the resurrection never happened—the resurrection is the revival.
What's a truth that used to feel heavy but now doesn't hit the same? When you're sixteen, turning thirty feels like a prison sentence. But when you actually hit thirty, you realize you never have to do high school again. Perspective changed the weight. But here's the thing—not everything gets lighter with time. Some truths get heavier. The consequence outlives the act. You can be forgiven and still be rebuilding trust. You can say "I'm sorry" and still see the impact in someone else's eyes. The scar is still there. This goes back to Genesis 3—Adam and Eve were forgiven, but the ground still had thorns. They were forgiven, but they still had to live among thorns.
But Easter is where everything shifts. Because while the consequence might outlive the act, it does not outlive the King. Jesus doesn't ignore the consequence—He carries it. The soldiers wove a crown of thorns and put it on His head. Our curse became His crown. Our weight became His burden. Then they nailed Him to the cross with iron spikes—permanent, clenched in place. He was pierced for our rebellion, crushed for our sins. At the end, Jesus said "It is finished"—Tetelestai, written on receipts in the marketplace meaning "Paid in Full." The debt is gone. The account is closed. The curtain tore from top to bottom. The earth shook. Rocks split apart.
But revivals doesn't matter if the resurrection never happened. If Jesus stayed in the grave, "Paid in Full" is just words. If He stays dead, the debt is still yours. If He stays dead, you're still carrying the weight. But He didn't stay. The stone was rolled away. The tomb was empty. Jesus appeared to Mary Magdalene first, then to the disciples, then to more than 500 people at once. Even the guards saw what happened. Even the ground remembers. The resurrection signaled revival because what was supposed to die gained life. The resurrection is the revival. You're not living for victory—you're living from it. The thorns that crushed us became the thorns He wore. And that is what makes true revival possible.
Main Takeaway:
Revival can happen because the resurrection happened. You're not living for victory—you're living from it.
