Hope for the City | Broken to Become — Week 4

Aug 23, 2026    Ryan Smart

Sometimes it takes something breaking to show you what was already there.

We treat brokenness like a problem to solve. Life cracks, and our instinct is to try harder — smooth it over, manage it, become a better version of ourselves before anyone notices. But trying harder doesn't fix what's actually broken. It just hides it better.

What if your breaking wasn't failure? What if it was exposure — and what gets exposed can finally be surrendered?

In week four of Hope for the City, Ryan Smart tracks Peter from a courtyard fire where he denies knowing Jesus three times, to a man teaching others not to fear their own threats. The courtyard didn't break Peter. It exposed what was already there. And Peter had to lose confidence in Peter before he could learn to trust Jesus. That's not trying harder. That's transformation.

The pain that feels like breaking could actually be your making.

What is breaking exposing in you right now?
